A theory of change explains the process of how a change will occur; it illustrates the relationships between actions and outcomes and how they can work together to bring about a desired change (Anderson, 2005).

Theory of change is actually a very simple concept. Throughout our work and personal lives we have aims, objectives and ideas about how to achieve our goals, but we rarely take the time to think these through, articulate and scrutinise them. All a theory of change process does is to make these assumptions explicit and therefore more testable. Two Types: One Logic We describe two types of models: theory of change and program. They differ by level of detail and use but represent the same logic. A theory of change model is simply a general representation of how you believe change will occur. A program logic model details resources, planned activities, and their outputs and outcomes To prevent logic models and theories of change being included in reviews and protocols as simply part of a tick-box exercise, there is a need to develop good practice on how to use programme theory in systematic reviews, as well as developing good practice on how to develop a logic model/theory of change.
